About
Toned milk is a dairy product produced in India by mixing whole buffalo or cow milk with skim milk or reconstituted skimmed milk powder, reducing fat content to a regulated minimum of 3.0% while maintaining solids-not-fat (SNF) at a minimum of 8.5%. It is the most widely consumed processed milk variant in India, offering a lower-fat, more affordable alternative to full cream milk while retaining essential nutrients such as protein, calcium, and B vitamins.
Safety summary
Toned milk is broadly recognised as safe for the general healthy population; evidence from large cohort studies links low-fat milk consumption to reduced all-cause and cardiovascular mortality compared to whole milk. Like all bovine milk, it contains lactose (~4.5–4.8%) and cow milk proteins, making it unsuitable for individuals with lactose intolerance or cow's milk protein allergy. No Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) is established, as toned milk is a whole food rather than a food additive or single chemical substance.
