About
Polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (PVPP) is an insoluble, cross-linked synthetic polymer of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone used primarily as a clarifying and stabilising agent in beverages such as beer and wine, where it adsorbs polyphenols and tannins to improve colloidal stability and clarity. After treatment the polymer is removed by filtration, leaving negligible residue in the finished product; it is also used as a tablet carrier/excipient in food supplements.
Safety summary
EFSA's 2020 re-evaluation concluded there is no safety concern at reported use levels and no numerical acceptable daily intake (ADI) is required. Radiolabelled studies in rats show the vast majority of the dose is excreted in faeces with very low gastrointestinal absorption; trace absorbed amounts are eliminated principally via the kidney. No carcinogenic effects were observed in rat carcinogenicity studies up to 2,500 mg/kg bw per day (the highest dose tested), and no genotoxicity concern has been identified.
Regulatory landscape
| Jurisdiction | Status | Note |
|---|---|---|
| EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) (European Union) | Approved | Authorised in Annex II and Annex III to Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 as a food additive; specific purity criteria defined in Commission Regulation (EU) No 231/2012. EFSA 2020 re-evaluation confirmed no numerical ADI is needed and no safety concern exists at reported use levels. Commission Regulation (EU) 2025/1337 further extended authorisation as a carrier in colour tablets for decorative colouring of poultry eggshells (Annex III, Part 1).source |
| MHLW (Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare) (Japan) | Approved | Approved for use as a filter aid under Japan's Specifications and Standards for Food Additives; water-soluble substances purity test standardised by the National Institute of Health Sciences.source |
| FDA (Food and Drug Administration) (United States) | Approved | Permitted as a secondary direct food additive (clarifying agent) in malt beverages under 21 CFR 173.50; also permitted as a processing aid with GMP-level use.source |
