About
Milk protein concentrate (MPC) is a dairy ingredient produced from skim milk by ultrafiltration, removing lactose and minerals while retaining both casein and whey proteins, typically containing 40–90% protein on a dry-weight basis. It is used in food manufacturing as a protein source, emulsifier, stabilizer, texturizer, and foaming agent in products such as beverages, nutrition bars, infant formula, cheese, and sports nutrition products.
Safety summary
MPC is broadly regarded as safe for healthy adults; it carries no ADI restriction, no IARC carcinogenicity classification, and no known toxicity at normal dietary intakes. The primary safety consideration is its status as a major food allergen (milk), requiring mandatory allergen labelling under FDA, EU, FSSAI, and Codex rules. Individuals with cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) or severe lactose intolerance (residual lactose may be present in lower-protein grades) must avoid it; no concerns exist for the general adult population at typical food-use levels.
Regulatory landscape
| Jurisdiction | Status | Note |
|---|---|---|
| EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) (European Union) | Approved | Intact cow's milk protein (including MPC) is an approved protein source in follow-on formulae and general foods under Regulation (EU) 2016/127. Use in infant formula and follow-on formula is governed by Delegated Regulation (EU) 2016/127 (applicable from 22 February 2021); each protein hydrolysate form requires individual EFSA safety evaluation. MPC as an intact protein ingredient in conventional foods is permitted under general food law (Regulation (EC) No 178/2002).source |
| FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) (India) | Approved | Milk protein concentrates are classified as milk derivatives and recognized milk products under FSSAI Food Products Standards and Food Additives Regulations, 2011 (as amended). Mandatory Milk Logo labelling applies. Permitted in infant complementary foods under FSS (Infant Nutrition) Regulations, 2020 (Version II, 2024).source |
| FDA (Food and Drug Administration) (United States) | Approved | Earlier GRAS Notice GRN 000504 covers milk protein concentrate (MPC) and milk protein isolate (MPI); Leprino GRN 000633 incorporates GRN 000504 safety data by reference.source |
